Among the best of the many Western series from TV’s Golden Era of the 1950s, Wanted: Dead or Alive was introduced as a pilot in 1958. Quickly gaining notoriety, Wanted: Dead or Alive chronicled the adventures of bounty-hunter Josh Randall (played by Steve McQueen) as he pursues and captures some of the West’s most notorious villains − alive if possible, but dead if necessary. Though not bound to honor the edicts of the law, Josh adhered to a personal code of honor, like many other lone cowboy heroes of the era. He toted a specially designed weapon which he affectionately referred to as the "Mare's Laig" − a .40 gauge sawed-off carbine which handles like a pistol, but packs the punch of a rifle. In 94 episodes over three seasons, Wanted: Dead or Alive became one of television’s most beloved Westerns.
